Whatever Happened to
The Garden of Eden ?
Adam and Eve (click-here)
In time Eden became a darkened reminder
of what could have been.

Adam and Eve were forced to leave their Edenic Paradise.
They went AND left it all behind them, never to return.
Thus Paradise was lost by Adam and Eve.
The once lush and fertile region of Eden, soon fell into disuse,
and decay. The angels of Jehovah kept guard over Eden, to
ensure that Adam and Eve would never return.

The garden grew dark and dismal with no one to enjoy
the beauty and pleasure that it was intended for.
And yet the garden remained upon the earth, as a silent
reminder of what mankind could have had.

Yes, it remained right until the days of Adam's
descendant, Noah.

EDEN AND THE "FLOOD"

The Flood's Warning Message (click-here)
Due to violence upon the earth because of mankind,
eventually Jehovah God, intervened and destroyed
the wicked offspring of Adam, by means of a world-wide
flood.

Then the earthly Paradise of Eden - was swept away.

Yes, like everything else on the earth, the Garden was
drowned beneath the roaring sea of the Flood.

At the time of the world wide flood of Noah's day,
all remnants of Eden were totally wiped away.

That original earthly paradise was washed away,
beneath the quelling waves of the Great Flood
of Noah's Day. Yes, washed away, forever.

SKEPTICS WONDER
With Eden's disappearance, many skeptics doubt
that it ever existed. Many play off the garden
of Eden story as sheer myth. They prefer the
"evolution from apes" story instead.

Although Jesus, spoke of the flood and of the
Garden of Eden - as factual, still many doubt even him.

ANY SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE ?
Is there any scientific or archaeological evidence
that the Garden of Eden was a real place, and not
just a fairytale ?
Scientific Proof of Eden
Eden is described in Genesis 2:10â14:
âA river watering the garden flowed from Eden;
from there it was separated into four headwaters.
The name of the first is the Pishon;
it winds through the entire land of Havilah,
where there is gold.
The gold of that land is good;
aromatic resin and onyx are also there.
The name of the second river is the Gihon;
it winds through the entire land of Cush.
The name of the third river is the Tigris;
it runs along the east side of Asshur.
And the fourth river is the Euphrates.â
"The Garden of Eden has been dismissed by Bible critics
as imaginary or allegorical. However, Gen. 2:8-13
indicates that Eden had a specific geographic location,
especially since two of its rivers, the Euphrates and
the Hiddekel (Tigris) are two of the best-known rivers
in the ancient world. Eden did indeed have an actual
location, and science is just beginning to unravel its
mystery. "

"The search began in the 1980âs, when Juris Zarins,
a professor from Southwest Missouri State University,
discovered that the northern tip of the Persian Gulf
(where the Tigris and Euphrates end) had once been a
lush, fertile region. "

"The area he investigated was located at the junction of
four rivers: the Tigris (Hiddekel); the Euphrates; the
Karun River in southwestern Iran, which Dr. Zarins postulates
is the Biblical Gihon; and the now-dry riverbed Rimah-Batin,
which Zarins believes is the Pison.
Zarinsâ hypothesis was prompted by advances in satellite
technology, "

"Lost Rivers Of Eden

"Scrutinizing satellite images of the Middle East,
he spotted a "fossil river" that seems to be the lost
Pison river. Therefore Eden, Zarins concludes, lies
under the mouth of the present Persian Gulf between
Iraq and Iran."

(as recorded in the Bible)."

"In support of locating the Garden of Eden in the

It is interesting to note that the Biblical Archaeology
Review, a magazine which, despite its name, does NOT
support a literal belief in the Bible, Yet despite
this fact, this magazine has printed scientific proof
to support the exact location of the Biblical, Garden
of Eden. The Magazine writes :

"Dr. Zarins is no longer alone in his discovery."
"Boston University geologist Farouk El-Baz emulated
Prof. Zarins by closely examining satellite photographs
of the Arabian Peninsula and the Persian Gulf area."
"He detected a fossil river running diagonally through

Persian Gulf â exactly where Zarins had located the
Garden of Eden."

This magazine goes on to say :
"The Kuwait River [the Batin] also has a probable
Biblical connection. It may well be the Pishon River,
one of the four rivers, according to the Bible,
associated with Eden."

it is the one that flows around
the whole land of Havilah,

(Genesis 2:11-12)

"This passage describe a river flowing into the head
of the Persian Gulf from the low mountains of western
Arabia, the path followed by the recently discovered
Kuwait River. An important key is the Biblical phrase
"the gold of that land is good." Only one place in
Arabia has such a deposit â the famous site of
Mahd edh-Dhahab, the "Cradle of Gold."
This ancient and modern gold mining site is located
about 125 miles south of Medina, near the headwaters
of the Kuwait River."

"In any event, no other river would seem to fit the
Biblical description. I am therefore inclined to think
that the Kuwait River could well be the Pishon of the
Bible. If so, it implies extraordinary memory on the
part of the Biblical authors, since the river dried up
sometime between about 3500 and 2000 B.C.
I speak as a former skeptic....Now I am recanting."

More About Eden
Eden is derived from the Akkadian word "edinu"
which comes from the Sumarian word eden,
which means fertile plain or steppe.
That word is a transliteration of the Hebrew
word, "ádan", which means garden of delight.
Biblical names of places are many times geographic
descriptions.

Eden - the "Cradle" of Human Civilization
"Mesopotamia, considered to be the
"cradle of civilization," is believed to be the
site of the biblical Garden of Eden. This area is
located between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers
in southern Iraq. It was home in 4,000 B.C. to
the Sumerians, mankind's first civilization, and the
birthplace of math, writing and science."

Eden and Iraq
"The land of Iraq is prominent in the Bible.
You will not find the name Iraq there, but you
will find the Land of Shinar, Mesopotamia,
Assyria and Babylon, all of which occupied parts
of the land we now know as Iraq. Mesopotamia means
the land between the rivers, which would be the
Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. The name Iraq means
"deep roots." And indeed Iraq has deep roots in the
history of mankind and the Bible. There were events
in that land from creation, and the earliest history
of mankind. "

"Some scholars have put the Garden of Eden in Iraq
because of the junction of the Tigris and Euphrates
Rivers that defined the garden. They thus place the
garden of Eden in the far south of Iraq at Eridu."
-Iraq and the Bible; by Dale Smelser
Wildercroft Announcements bulletin, April 27, 2003
"Later information looks at the other two rivers,
the Pishon and Havillah (Gen. 2:11-14), that are
mentioned in relation to the garden. Infrared
Satellite photos have disclosed the beds of two
ancient rivers, no longer existent, but now buried
under the sand. They join the ancient connection of
the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers under the waters
of what is now the upper Persian Gulf, just South
of Iraq. Thus the Garden of Eden may be submerged
beneath the waters there."

Jesus Buys Back -
What Adam Lost

THE PERFECT RANSOM
OF "EQUAL" VALUE

Jesus provided the perfect ransom for what Adam lost.
A Perfect Human Life ------- For a Perfect Human Life.
If Jesus had been God-in-the-flesh, as some have claimed
then the scales would have tipped out of balance.
It would not have been an equal exchange.
It would not have satisfied God's laws of balance.
A God-man would have been of considerable more weight
than was required for an equal exchange - or ransom.
Why ?
God's Own Law Says :
God's Own Laws Require Equal Value
"...you are to take life for life,
eye for eye, tooth for tooth,
hand for hand, foot for foot..."
(Exodus 21:23,24)(NIV)-BibleGateway
Adam was NOT a God-man.
The equal of his perfect Life that he lost -
Was another Perfect Life. - Not a God-man.
Think About it.
The Bible describes this "Even" Exchange
of the ONE Man - for the One Man.

"Therefore, just as sin entered the world
through one man, and death through sin,
and in this way death came to all men...
...and the gift that came by the grace
of the one man, Jesus Christ."
(Romans 5:12,15)(NIV)-BibleGateway

"For if, by the trespass of the one man,
death reigned through that one man,
how much more will those who receive...
...the gift of life through
the one man, Jesus Christ."
(Romans 5:17)(NIV)-BibleGateway
"For just as through the disobedience
of the one man the many were made sinners,
so also through the obedience of the one man
the many will be made righteous."
(Romans 5:19)(NIV)-BibleGateway

Jesus - NOT a God-man
But a Mediator between God and Mankind -
the "Ransom"
"For there is one God
and one mediator
between God and men,
' the man' Christ Jesus,
who gave himself as a ransom for all..."
(1Timothy 2:5,6)
Take Advantage of this Perfect Ransom -
The Man - appointed by God - Jesus Christ

"In the past
God overlooked such ignorance,
but now he commands all people
everywhere to repent.
For he has set a day
when he will judge the world with justice
by the man he has appointed.
He has given proof of this to all men
by raising him from the dead."
(Acts 17:30,31)(NIV)-BibleGateway

CHARIOT WHEELS

CHARIOT WHEELS

A Silent Testimony
to the Miracle of
"The Parting"
of the Red Sea

Most of the chariot wheels that were discoverd
in the sea bed were separated or torn off from
their axels. Most men of science would wonder why
this was so. Yet for those who believe in miracles,
the answer is very easy to find in the scriptures
of the Bible.
Evidently, the Egyptians were moving much faster
by wheel than the Israelites were moving by foot.
Thus they were catching up to them, far too quickly.
In an attempt to protect his people, Jehovah God
began pulling the wheels off the chariots, in order
to slow them down.
"...in the morning watch Jehovah looked unto the
host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire
and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the
Egyptians, And took off their chariot wheels,
that they drave them heavily..."
(Exodus 14:24,25)(ASV)-BibleGateway

Just imagine the scene of such a great miracle as this.
Pharoah had set Jehovah's people free, and Moses was
leading them out of slavery to Egypt, when suddenly
Pharoah changed his mind, and called all his army to
chase after them.

Eventually Pharoah had them cornered against the shores
of the Red Sea. There was only one way for them to go
to avoid capture.

"And Moses said unto the people,
fear not, stand still, and see the
salvation of JEHOVAH, which He will
show you today, for the Egyptians whom
you have seen today, you shall see them
no more again forever...and JEHOVAH caused
the sea to go back by strong east wind
all that night, and made the sea dry land,
and the waters were divided. And the
children of Israel went into the midst of
the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters
were a wall unto them on their right hand,
and on their left."
(Exodus 14:13, 21, 22)(ASV)-BibleGateway

"...and JEHOVAH caused
the sea to go back by strong east wind
all that night, and made the sea dry land,
and the waters were divided. And the
children of Israel went into the midst of
the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters
were a wall unto them on their right hand,
and on their left."
(Exodus 14:13, 21, 22)(ASV)-BibleGateway

"And the Egyptians pursued,
and went in after them
into the midst of the sea,
all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots,
and his horsemen."
(Exodus 14:23)(ASV)-BibleGateway
"During the last watch of the night
the LORD looked down from the pillar of
fire and cloud at the Egyptian army
and threw it into confusion. He made the
wheels of their chariots come off so that
they had difficulty driving. And the Egyptians
said, "Let's get away from the Israelites!
The LORD is fighting for them against Egypt."
(Exodus 14:24,25)(NIV)-BibleGateway
"Then the LORD said to Moses,
'Stretch out your hand over the sea
so that the waters may flow back over
the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen.'
Moses stretched out his hand over the sea,
and at daybreak the sea went back to its place.
The Egyptians were fleeing toward it,
and the LORD swept them into the sea.
The water flowed back and covered the chariots
and horsemenâthe entire army of Pharaoh that had
followed the Israelites into the sea.
Not one of them survived."
(Isaiah 14:26-28)(NIV)-BibleGateway

"But the children of Israel walked upon
dry land in the midst of the sea;
and the waters were a wall unto them
on their right hand, and on their left.
Thus Jehovah saved Israel that day
out of the hand of the Egyptians;
and Israel saw the Egyptians dead
upon the sea-shore. And Israel saw the
great work which Jehovah did upon the Egyptians,
and the people feared Jehovah: and they
believed in Jehovah, and in his servant Moses."
(Isaiah 14:29-31)(ASV)-BibleGateway

What a wonderful testimony to the saving power
of the Great God Jehovah.
We can look forward to his protection in the near future
as the world is entering a troublesome time at the return
of His Glorious son, Jesus Christ.
Lets take another look at this "Silent Testimony"
to Jehovah God's Saving Power.

More Silent Testimony Pictures
and background
The "Red Sea"

"Red Sea" is used to refer to all sections
of that sea - the main body, the Gulf of Suez
and the Gulf of Aqaba.

If you get a large map of Egypt, you will note
that the Red Sea is quite large - beginning at
Ethiopia on the southwest and Yemen on the
southeast. It separates northern Africa from
Arabia. At its northern end, it splits into two arms -
the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba.

In the 1970's, Ron Wyatt and his sons, led an
archaelogical expedition in search of the Red Sea
for evidence of the days of Moses and the parting
of the Red Sea.

Ron Wyatt examined the route taken by Moses and the
great multitude as they fled Egypt by means of Bible
passages and Egyptian history. He examined the
evidences which tell exactly who were the Egyptian
royalties involved and the approximate date the Exodus
occurred.

In 1978, Ron Wyatt and his two sons traveled to the
beach at Nuweiba, to dive in the waters of the gulf
to search for chariot parts or anything they could
find that would identify this site as the genuine
location where Moses and the Israelites crossed the
Red Sea.

This Chariot cab section was found in the same area
as the chariot wheels and human bones.
There at the beach Ron found a 17' tall red granite,
Phoenician style column fallen into the edge of the
water. This pillar was lying on the southern end of
the beach. Partially in the water, the inscriptions
had been eroded away, or possibly they were purposefully
chiseled away. Later he found a matching column on the
other side of the gulf in Saudi Arabia with the Hebrew
words for Egypt, death, water, pharaoh, Yehowah, and
Solomon, and concluded that King Solomon had these
columns erected 400 years after the miracle of the crossing
of the Red Sea on dry land.

Solomon's sea port was at the northern tip of the Gulf
of Aqaba at Elath (I Kings 9:26) and he was very familiar
with the Red Sea crossing site, as it was in his
neighborhood.
The Bible even mentions this column at Isaiah 19:19,
"In that day shall there be an altar to Jehovah
in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at
the border thereof to Jehovah."
(Isaiah 19:19)(ASV)-BibleGateway

Researching the Route
After researching the route that the Israelites might
have taken in their exodus from Egypt, Ron Wyatt found
that the Biblical description fitted perfectly with a
deep gorge called Wadi Watir.
Traditionally it is believed that the Red Sea crossing
took place on the Gulf of Suez. However, there are no
mountains to be found there. The area is completely flat,
unlike the Biblical description.
The Gulf of Suez was also a popular site because it
is traditionally believed that Mt. Sinai is on the
Sinai Peninsula. Again the Bible tells us differently,
(Galations 4:25), "Mt. Sinai in ARABIA".

After several miles Wadi Watir opens out to a large
beach area, on the western coast of the Gulf of Aquaba.
The only beach area along the Gulf of Aquaba, that would
have been large enough to accommodate the estimated two
million people and their flocks.

The Israelites were prevented from traveling north by
the presence of an Egyptian military fortress. Indeed
to the north of the mouth of Wadi Watir we find an
ancient fortress, could this have been the place
referred to in the Bible as, Migdol. (Exodus 14:2).

Ancient Fortress at Nurweiba
(Pihahiroth)

The remains of this Egyptian military fortress
may very well have been the one that blocked
Moses and the Israelites and forced them to cross
the Red Sea. On the north end of the beach area,
there are the remains of an ancient Egyptian fortress,
which would have prevented their going north
when they entered the area.

To the south the mountains extend all the way down
to the sea, thus preventing any further passage.
Of course they could not turn around and retrace
their steps as the Egyptian army was pursuing them.
God had brought them to a point where only He could
deliver them,
"And Moses said unto the people, fear not,
stand still, and see the salvation of JEHOVAH,
which He will show you today, for the Egyptians
whom you have seen today, you shall see them no more
again forever...and JEHOVAH caused the sea to go
back by strong east wind all that night, and made
the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.
And the children of Israel went into the midst
of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were
a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left."
(Exodus 14:13, 21, 22).(American Standard Version)

On diving down to the sea bed, in 1978, Ron Wyatt
and his two sons found and photographed numerous
coral encrusted chariot parts. Human bones and skeletal
remains were also found in the same area. Even horse
skeletal remains were found. Horse hoofs were also
found in the same vicinity as the chariot parts.

This gold chariot wheel was found close to
the shore, indicating that this chariot was following
behind the warriors. A position noted for the Egyptian
priests, who were known to be riders of the golden
chariots.
Aaron Sen has also dived on several occasions at this
site, and can testify to the validity of the discovery.
In March 1998, he photographed the remains of a four
spoke chariot wheel, and has taken up human bones of
which there are 'dozens' scattered on the sea bed.

One specimen of human bones
was taken to the Department of Osteology
at Stockholm University, and tested, proving to be a
human, male, right side femur. Although it cannot be
dated, it was evidently from ancient times.

Back in the late 1970's, Ron Wyatt retrieved a hub of one
of the chariot wheels which had the remains of 8 spokes
radiating outward from it. He took this to Cairo, to the
office of Nassif Mohammed Hassan, the director of
Antiquities. Mr. Hassan examined it and immediately
pronounced it to be of the 18th Dynasty of ancient Egypt.
This was the time of Moses.

What can we learn from all this ?
The saving power of Jehovah God is real
and alive, and all powerful.
In these "Last Days", we can be assured
that Jehovah's Saving Power will again be exercised
in much the same way as it was in Noah's day.
STAND STILL AND SEE
THE SALVATION OF JEHOVAH

STAND STILL AND SEE
THE SALVATION OF JEHOVAH

"stand ye still,
and see the salvation of Jehovah..."
(2Chronicles 20:17)(ASV)-BibleGateway
Almighty God Jehovah has plans to take
care of all earth's woes.
And it will not require us to do aNYthing -
except to STAND STILL AND WATCH.
"Ye shall not need to fight in this battle:
set yourselves, stand ye still,
and see the salvation of Jehovah with you.."
(2Chronicles 20:17)(ASV)-BibleGateway
"Stand still,
and consider the wondrous works of God."
(Job 37:14)(ASV)-BibleGateway
"Now therefore stand still
and see this great thing,
which Jehovah will do before your eyes."
(1Samuel 12:16) (ASV)-BibleGateway
IN THE PAST,
JEHOVAH HAS SHOWN
SALVATION FOR HIS PEOPLE ---
WHILE THEY JUST STOOD BACK
AND WATCHED -

"And Moses said unto the people,
Fear ye not, STAND STILL,
and see the salvation of Jehovah,
which he will work for you to-day:
for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to-day,
ye shall see them again no more for ever."
(Exodus 14:13)(ASV)-BibleGateway
And again, in the "Last Days" of this system of things,
mankind will "Stand Still" and watch the Salvation
of Jehovah again.
Yes, by means of his son, Jesus Christ;
the world will be cleansed of all evildoers.
"The harvest is the end of the age,
and the harvesters are angels.
The Son of Man will send out his angels,
and they will weed out of his kingdom
everything that causes sin and all who do evil."
(Matthew 13:39-41) (NIV) -BibleGateway
GOD TELLS US NOT TO TAKE THINGS
INTO OUR OWN HANDS;
BUT RATHER TO LET HIM
BRING VENGEANCE ON EVILDOERS.
"Do not avenge yourselves, beloved,
but yield place to the wrath;
for it is written:
"Vengeance is mine;
I will repay, says Jehovah."
(Romans 12:19)(NWT)
"Do not say, "I will repay evil";
Wait for the LORD, and He will save you."
(Proverbs 20:22)(NASB)-BibleGateway
"Say NOT thou,
I will recompense evil:
Wait for Jehovah, and he will save thee."
(Proverbs 20:22)(ASV)-BibleGateway
"Thou shalt not take vengeance,
nor bear any grudge...
I am Jehovah. "
(Leviticus 19:18) (ASV)-BibleGateway
"Vengeance is mine,
and recompense(repayment)...
For Jehovah will judge his people."
(Deuteronomy 32:35,36)(ASV)-BibleGateway
WE ARE WARNED IN ADVANCE
THAT THE EARTH'S SINNERS WILL BE REMOVED
AND ALL WE HAVE TO DO - IS
"STAND STILL" AND WATCH -
"Watch now. GOD's Judgment Day comes.
Cruel it is, a day of wrath and anger,
A day to waste the earth
and clean out all the sinners."
(Isaiah 13:9)(MSG)-BibleGateway
"A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
You will "only" observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked."
(Psalm 91:7,8)(NIV)-BibleGateway
"Behold, the day of Jehovah cometh,
cruel both with wrath and fierce anger,
to lay the earth desolate;
and he will destroy the sinners thereof out of it."
(Isaiah 13:9)(Darby)-BibleGateway
"But the destruction of transgressors and sinners
shall be together, and they that forsake Jehovah
shall be consumed."
(Isaiah 1:28)(ASV)-BibleGateway
"Let sinners be consumed out of the earth.
And let the wicked be no more.
Bless Jehovah, O my soul. Praise ye Jehovah."
(Psalm 104:35)(ASV)-BibleGateway
JEHOVAH HAS APPOINTED HIS SON -
TO ACCOMPLISH ALL THIS
"And the Spirit of Jehovah
shall rest upon him,
the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and might,
the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of Jehovah.
And his delight shall be in the fear of Jehovah;
and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes,
neither decide after the hearing of his ears;
but with righteousness shall he judge the poor,
and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
and he shall smite the earth
with the rod of his mouth;
and with the breath of his lips
shall he slay the wicked."
(Isaiah 11:2-4)(ASV)-BibleGateway
"...at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven
with the angels of his power in flaming fire,
rendering vengeance to them that know not God,
and to them that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus:

The Walls of Jericho

The Walls of Jericho
Joshua, Chapter 6: 2-5:
2 And the Lord Jehovah said unto Joshua,
See I have given into thine hand Jericho,
and the king thereof, and the mighty men
of valour.
3 An ye shall compass the city,
all ye men of war, and go round about
the city once. Thus shalt you do six days.
4 And seven priests shall bear before
the ark seven trumpets of ram's horns:
and the seventh day ye shall compass
the city seven times, and the priests
shall blow with the trumpets.
5 And it shall come to pass,
that when they make a long blast
with the ram's horn, and when ye hear
the sound of the trumpet, all the people
shall shout with a great shout;
and the wall of the city shall fall down flat,
and the people shall ascend up every man
straight before him.
``````````````````
According to the Bible, the conquest
of Jericho occurred in approximately
1440 B.C. The miraculous nature of the
conquest has caused some scholars to
dismiss the story as folklore.
Does archaeology support the biblical account?
Over the past century four prominent
archaeologists have excavated the site:
Carl Watzinger from 1907-1909,
John Garstang in the 1930's,
Kathleen Kenyon from 1952-1958,
and currently Bryant Wood.
The result of their work has been remarkable.
First, they discovered that Jericho had
an impressive system of fortifications.
Surrounding the city was a retaining wall
fifteen feet high. At its top was an eight
foot brick wall strengthened from behind
by an earthen rampart. Domestic structures
were found behind this first wall.
Another brick wall enclosed the rest of the
city. The domestic structures found between
the two walls is consistent with Joshua's
description of Rahab's quarters (Josh. 2:15).
Archeologists also found that in one part
of the city, large piles of bricks were found
at the base of both the inner and outer walls,
indicating a sudden collapse of the fortifications.
Scholars feel that an earthquake, which may also
explain the damming of the Jordan in the biblical
account, caused this collapse. The collapsed
bricks formed a ramp by which an invader might
easily enter the city (Josh. 6:20).
Of this amazing discovery Garstang states,
"As to the main fact, then,
there remains no doubt:
the walls fell outwards so completely,
the attackers would be able to clamber up
and over the ruins of the city."
- John Garstang,
The Foundations of Bible History;
Joshua, Judges
(London: Constable, 1931), 146.
This is remarkable information because
normally whenever cities are attacked -
the city walls always fall inward, not outward.
A thick layer of soot indicates that
the city was destroyed by fire as described
in Joshua 6:24.
The Israelites
"burned the whole city and everything in it"
(Joshua 6:24).
Kenyon describes it this way.
"The destruction was complete.
Walls and floors were blackened
or reddened by fire and every room
was filled with fallen bricks."
-Kathleen Kenyon and Thomas Holland,
Excavations at Jericho Vol. 3:
The Architecture and Stratigraphy
of the Tell, (London: BSA), 370.
How Does The Bible Tell It ?
According to the biblical account,
after the Israelites marched around the city
once a day for six days, on the seventh day they
encircled the city seven times. On the seventh time
around, the priests blew the trumpets, the people shouted
and the walls fell flat.
The story in the Bible goes on to say that when
the walls collapsed, the Israelites stormed the city
and set it on fire. Archaeologists found evidence for
a massive destruction by fire just as the Bible relates.
Even the New Testament Writers
Considered this account to be Factual
"By faith the walls of Jericho fell,
after the people had marched around them
for seven days. By faith the prostitute Rahab,
because she welcomed the spies, was not killed
with those who were disobedient" (Hebrews 11:30-31).
There are many ideas as to how the walls of Jericho came down.
Both Garstang and Kenyon found evidence of earthquake activity
at the time the city met its end. If God did use an earthquake to
accomplish His purposes that day, it was still a miracle since it happened
at precisely the right moment, and was manifested in such a way
as to protect Rahabâs house. No matter what agency God used,
it was ultimately He who, through the faith of the Israelites, brought
the walls down. After the people had marched around them for seven
days, it was âby faith the walls of Jericho fell downâ (Hebrews 11:30).
ARCHAEOLOGY BACKS BIBLICAL VERSION
OF JERICHO'S DEMISE
"The walls of Jericho did come
tumbling down as recounted in the Bible,
according to an archaeological study."
"When we compare the archaeological
evidence at Jericho with the biblical
narrative describing the Israelite
destruction of Jericho, we find
remarkable agreement."
-Archaeologist Bryant G. Wood
"All the canons of historical criticism
demand that we accept the main facts of
the story of the conquest of Jericho
as authentic, for it was obviously an
event of great importance in the ultimate
dominance of the Israelites in Palestine,
and the wealth of detail makes it clear
that it was a faithful verbal record
handed down for generations until it was
incorporated in a written recordâ¦"
"The Walls of Jericho; Archeology confirms:
they really DID come a-tumblin' down."
-the Creation Ex Nihilo magazine
"The correlation between the archaeological evidence
and the biblical narrative is substantial:- the city was strongly
fortified (Joshua 2:5,7,15, 6:5,20); the attack occurred just
after harvest time in the spring (Joshua 2:6, 3:15, 5:10);
the inhabitants had no opportunity to flee with their foodstuffs
(Joshua 6:1); the siege was short (Joshua 6:15); the walls were
leveled, possibly by an earthquake (Joshua 6:20); the city was
not plundered (Joshua 6:17-18); the city was burned (Joshua 6:24)."
-Bryant G. Wood, "Did the Israelites Conquer Jericho;
A New Look at the Archaeological Evidence,"
Biblical Archaeology Review, March/April 1990, pp. 44-58.
"The destruction was complete.
Walls and floors were blackened
or reddened by fire, and every room
was filled with fallen bricks,
timbers, and household utensils;
in most rooms the fallen debris
was heavily burnt, but the collapse
of the walls of the eastern rooms
seems to have taken place before
they were affected by the fire."
--Kathleen Kenyon and Thomas Holland,
Excavations at Jericho Vol. 3:
The Architecture and Stratigraphy
of the Tell, (London: BSA)
(Wood, p. 56).
"It is one of the most dramatic events
chronicled in the Old Testament....
the Israelites' assault on Jericho...
Archaeologist Bryant Wood says that the
city's walls could have come tumbling down
at just the right time to match the biblical
account. This does give plausibility to the
Old Testament version. Wood, an ancient-pottery
expert now at the University of Toronto,
dates the pottery found at Jericho to 1400 B.C.,
which is the same time some scholars date
Joshua's battle. A thick layer of soot at the
site, which according to radioactive carbon-14
dating was laid down about 1400 B.C., supports
the biblical idea that the city was burned,
not simply conquered. Finally, Egyptian amulets
found in Jericho graves can be dated to around
1400 B.C. as well. Says Wood: `It looks to me
as though the biblical stories are correct,'"
-Time magazine,
"Score One for the Bible,"
(March 5, 1990, p. 59).
âWhen we compare the archaeological evidence
at Jericho with the Biblical narrative describing
the Israelite destruction of Jericho, we find
a quite remarkable agreementâ
-âDid the Israelites Conquer Jericho?
âA New Look at the Archaeological Evidence,â
by Dr. Bryant G. Wood. Dr. Wood (p. 53)
The March/April, 1990 issue of Biblical Archaeology Review
States the Following --
The Bible indicates that Jericho was a strongly fortified city.
It was surrounded by a âwall,â and access to the fortress
could only be obtained through the city âgateâ
(Joshua 2:5,7,15; 6:5,20). Biblical Archaeology Review notes:
âThe cityâs outer defenses consisted of a stone revetment wall
[some 15 feet high] at the base of the tell [hill] that held in place
a high, plastered rampart. Above the rampart on top of the tell
was [the remnant of] a mudbrick wall [about 8 feet high at one point]
which served as Jerichoâs city wall properâ (see Wood, p. 46).
According to the Old Testament, the invasion occurred just
following the 14th day of Abib (March/April) (Joshua 5:10),
thus in the springtime, or in the harvest season (3:15).
Rahab was drying flax upon her roof (2:6). Both Garstang
and Kenyon found large quantities of grain stored in the ruins
of Jerichoâs houses. In a very limited excavation area,
Kenyon found six bushels of grain in one digging seasonâ
âThis,â as Wood comments, âis unique in the annals of
Palestinian archaeologyâ (p. 56).
The biblical record affirms that the conquest was swiftly
accomplished in only seven days (6:15). The people of Jericho
were confined to the city with no chance to escape (6:1).
The abundance of food supplies, as indicated above, confirms this.
Had the citizens of Jericho been able to escape, they would have
taken food with them. Had the siege been protracted, the food
would have been consumed. The Old Testament record is
meticulously accurate.
When the Israelites shouted with a great shout on that seventh day,
the âwall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the cityâ
(6:20; cf. Hebrews 11:30). Kenyonâs excavations uncovered,
at the base of Jerichoâs tell, a pile of red mudbricks which, she said,
âprobably came from the wall on the summit of the bankâ
(Kenyon, 1981, p. 110; as quoted in Wood, p. 54).
She described the brick pile as the result of a wallâs âcollapse.â
Professor Wood states that the amount of bricks found in the
cross-section of Kenyonâs work area would suggest an upper
wall 6.5 feet wide and 12 feet high (p. 54).
According to the Scriptures, Jericho was to be a city
âdevotedâ to God, hence, the Hebrews were to confiscate
the silver and gold, and the vessels of brass and iron for
Jehovahâs treasury. However, they were to take no personal
possessions (6:17-19). The archaeological evidence confirms this.
As indicated earlier, a considerable amount of grain was found
in Jericho. Grain, in biblical times, was exceedingly valuable,
being frequently used as a monetary exchange (see 1 Kings 5:11).
It is therefore unthinkable, unless by divine design, that the Israelites
would have taken Jericho, and left the grain intact. The Bible is right!
The Scriptures state that during the destruction of Jericho,
the city was set on fire (6:24). When Miss Kenyon dug down
into the city she discovered that the walls and floors of the houses
were âblackened or reddened by fire. . . in most rooms the fallen
debris was heavily burntâ (Kenyon, 1981, p. 370; as quoted
in Wood, p. 56).
The Bible indicates that Rahabâs house was built âupon the side
of the wall, and she dwelt upon the wallâ (2:15). A number of houses
were found just inside the revetment wall, which could have abutted
the wall [see point (1) above], thus easily accommodating an escape
access from the city (Wood, p. 56). The evidence indicates that this
area was the âpoor quarterâ of the cityâjust the type of residence
that one might expect a harlot to have.
Whereas Kathleen Kenyon contended that Jericho (City IV)
had been destroyed about 1550 B.C., and abandoned thereafter,
hence, there was no city for Joshua to conquer in 1400 B.C.
(according to the biblical chronology), the actual evidence indicates
otherwise. A cemetery outside of Jericho âhas yielded a continuous
series of Egyptian scarabs [small, beetle-shaped amulets, inscribed
on the underside, often with the name of a pharaoh] from the 18th
through the early-14th centuries B.C.E., contradicting Kenyonâs claim
that the city was abandoned after 1550 B.C.E.â (Wood, p. 53).
Other evidences indicate a harmony with the biblical chronology as well.
There is absolutely no reason to contend that the book of Joshua is in error
in its description of the conquest of Jericho.
